How many balls did AB de Villiers take to score the fastest ODI century?

The story behind the answer

AB de Villiers took 31 balls to score the fastest century in ODI cricket. He reached the landmark against the West Indies at Johannesburg's Wanderers Stadium on 18 January 2015.

The innings was an extraordinary burst of limited-overs batting. De Villiers first reached his fifty from only 16 balls, then continued attacking almost every delivery. He eventually made 149 runs from 44 balls, including 9 fours and 16 sixes, at a strike rate above 338.

The record was previously held by New Zealand's Corey Anderson, who scored an ODI hundred from 36 balls against the same opponents in 2014. That is why 36 can look familiar in quizzes, but it is not the current record. De Villiers's 31-ball hundred remains one of cricket's defining power-hitting performances.
