Six Apollo missions successfully landed astronauts on the Moon.
The successful landing missions were Apollo 11, Apollo 12, Apollo 14, Apollo 15, Apollo 16 and Apollo 17. Each sent two astronauts to the surface while a third astronaut remained in lunar orbit in the command module.
Apollo 13 was intended to land in the Fra Mauro region, but an oxygen-tank explosion crippled the spacecraft on the way to the Moon. Its crew safely returned to Earth after using the lunar module as a lifeboat, so it is not counted among the lunar landings.
Apollo 1 never reached space because a cabin fire during a ground test killed its three astronauts. Apollo 8 and Apollo 10 reached lunar orbit but did not attempt a landing. Together, the six landing missions put 12 different people on the lunar surface between 1969 and 1972.
