How many Academy Awards did The Lion King win? The Lion King won two Academy Awards.
At the 67th Academy Awards, honoring films released in 1994, Hans Zimmer won Best Original Score. Elton John and Tim Rice won Best Original Song for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” performed in the film and during its awards campaign by Elton John.
The film’s other nominated songs, “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata,” did not win. Their nominations are a frequent source of confusion because The Lion King had three songs competing in the same category, but only one received the award.
The two Oscars added to the film’s broader awards success. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, along with awards for its music. The Academy tally refers to the original 1994 animated film, not the later remake or the stage musical.
