Rocky received 10 Academy Award nominations. At the 49th Academy Awards, the film was recognized in major categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, both supporting-actor categories, Original Screenplay, Film Editing, Original Song, and Sound.
The 1976 film won three of those awards: Best Picture, Best Director for John G. Avildsen, and Best Film Editing. Its nominations also helped establish Sylvester Stallone as a rare double nominee for acting and writing; he was nominated for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.
A common mix-up is confusing Rocky’s 10 nominations with the 12 nominations earned by the entire Rocky franchise across multiple films. Rocky’s Best Picture victory was especially notable because it competed against films such as All the President’s Men, Network, and Taxi Driver.
