How many above-ground floors does Taipei 101 have?

The story behind the answer

Taipei 101 has 101 above-ground floors.

The skyscraper in Taipei, Taiwan, was designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and completed in 2004. Its name directly reflects the number of above-ground stories, while a further five basement levels serve transportation, retail and building services. The tower’s stacked sections and decorative motifs draw on forms associated with traditional Chinese culture.

The number 101 is sometimes confused with Taipei 101’s height, elevator speed or observatory locations. The building measures 508 metres to its architectural top, and its public observatories are located on several upper levels. It was the world’s tallest building from 2004 until Dubai’s Burj Khalifa opened in 2010.

Taipei 101 also became known for its tuned mass damper, a large suspended steel sphere that helps limit movement caused by wind and earthquakes. That engineering feature is separate from the building’s floor count.
