How long is the piste used in Paralympic wheelchair fencing?
Answer
4 metres
Answer
4 metres
The piste used in Paralympic wheelchair fencing is 4 metres long.
Wheelchair fencing adapts fencing for athletes who compete while seated. Each wheelchair is fixed to a metal frame, keeping it stationary while allowing the fencer to lean and move the upper body. Because competitors cannot advance or retreat, distance is adjusted with a shorter piste than in standard fencing.
The weapons are foil, épée and sabre, and athletes use the same basic fencing principles of attack, defence and scoring priority where applicable. The target area and rules differ by weapon, while the wheelchair position is secured before each bout.
The short piste should not be confused with the longer fencing piste used by standing fencers. Wheelchair fencing has been part of the Paralympic programme since the first official Games in Rome in 1960.
