The standard version of Metallica's 1991 album Metallica, commonly called The Black Album, runs for 62 minutes and 40 seconds.
That length covers the album's 12 original studio tracks, including several substantial songs such as “The Unforgiven,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Nothing Else Matters.” The record is long enough to feel expansive while remaining a conventional single-album program.
The duration belongs to the original standard release, not later anniversary editions. Expanded editions issued decades afterward added demos, rough mixes, live recordings, and other archival material, so their total running times are much longer.
The album's pacing also reflects its production style. Compared with Metallica's earlier records, many songs use slower grooves and broader arrangements, allowing the guitars, drums, and vocals to occupy a large, polished sound field.
