How long does Genesis say Noah waited inside the Ark before the Flood waters dried?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah waited inside the Ark for one year and ten days before the Flood waters dried.

The chronology begins when Noah enters the ark in the six hundredth year of his life, on the seventeenth day of the second month. Genesis later says Noah left in the six hundred and first year, on the twenty-seventh day of the second month. This produces a total of one year and ten days in the narrative’s calendar calculation.

The account includes several stages within that interval: forty days of rain, 150 days during which the waters prevailed, the ark resting on the mountains of Ararat, and the gradual appearance of the mountain tops and dry ground.

The figure is sometimes confused with forty days because the rain lasts forty days and nights. Rainfall duration and the total time aboard the ark are separate chronological details in Genesis.
