Honiara is situated on which Solomon Islands island?

The story behind the answer

Honiara is situated on which Solomon Islands island? Honiara is situated on Guadalcanal.

The city lies on Guadalcanal’s northwestern coast and is the capital and largest urban centre of Solomon Islands. Guadalcanal is the country’s largest island by area and population, although nearby Malaita is also a major island and a common source of confusion.

Honiara’s modern growth is closely tied to World War II. The area around today’s airport was the site of the Battle of Henderson Field during the 1942 Guadalcanal campaign. American wartime roads, airfields, port facilities and buildings helped make the settlement a practical administrative centre after the fighting.

After the war, Honiara replaced Tulagi as the capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate. It later became the capital of independent Solomon Islands in 1978. Guadalcanal should not be confused with Guadalcanal Province alone: Honiara has its own capital territory, even though it occupies the island’s coast.
