During the 2012 European Black Album Tour, Metallica performed the album in reverse order.
The tour marked a distinctive anniversary-style presentation of the self-titled 1991 record. Rather than beginning with “Enter Sandman,” the album’s opening track, the band worked backward through the original sequence during the Black Album portion of the shows.
That approach meant the performance moved from “My Friend of Misery,” the final track on the original album, toward “Enter Sandman,” which was the first track. It gave longtime listeners a different live perspective on a record whose songs had become permanent parts of Metallica’s concert repertoire.
The tour took place in Europe in 2012, not in 1991 during the album’s initial promotional touring cycle. Metallica’s earlier support activities included the Wherever We May Roam Tour and the Monsters of Rock appearances, so the later reverse-order format should not be confused with the original tour sequence.
