Djokovic uses two hands on which groundstroke?

The story behind the answer

Djokovic uses two hands on his backhand. The two-handed backhand is one of the defining technical features of his game and has helped make him one of the most successful defensive and counterpunching players in tennis.

On a two-handed backhand, the player brings both hands to the racket handle and rotates the shoulders and torso through contact. This setup can provide stability, control and the ability to return fast serves early. Djokovic uses the stroke effectively both crosscourt and down the line, often changing direction without a large backswing.

Djokovic originally admired Pete Sampras, whose backhand was one-handed, but coach Jelena Genčić encouraged him to hit with two hands during his formative years. That technical choice became a major part of his identity as a player.

The backhand should not be confused with a volley or serve, which are different tennis strokes. Djokovic’s forehand is right-handed, while his backhand is the groundstroke for which he uses both hands. His backhand return has repeatedly helped him neutralize powerful servers.
