Dhaka is the capital of which South Asian country?
Answer
Bangladesh
Answer
Bangladesh
Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. Located in the Ganges–Brahmaputra delta, it is Bangladesh’s largest city and the country’s main political, economic, educational, and cultural centre.
Dhaka has a long history as a regional administrative hub. It became the capital of the Mughal province of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa in 1610 under Emperor Jahangir, when the city was known as Jahangirnagar. Under British rule it later served as the capital of Eastern Bengal and Assam after 1905, and in 1947 it became the administrative capital of East Pakistan.
Following Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, Dhaka became the capital of the new country. Today, national institutions include the presidential residence at Bangabhaban and the National Parliament House, designed by architect Louis Kahn. The name can be confused with Dhaka Division, the wider administrative region, but the quiz asks for the national capital city. Chittagong, now commonly called Chattogram, is a major port city—not Bangladesh’s capital.
