Casa de Nariño is the presidential residence and principal workplace in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. The neoclassical building houses the main office of Colombia’s executive branch and stands near the National Capitol in Bogotá’s historic governmental district.
The site is associated with Antonio Nariño, a Colombian independence hero who was born there in 1765. His family’s earlier house was later rebuilt and enlarged. Construction of the present structure began in 1906 under architects Gastón Lelarge and Julián Lombana, and the building was completed in 1908. It was designed with broad halls, carved stonework, and formal architectural details.
The building is also known as Palacio de Nariño; both names remain culturally acceptable. Its garden contains Bogotá’s historic astronomical observatory, built in 1802–03 by the Capuchin architect Domingo de Petrés. The residence was rededicated after major additions in 1980 and contains artworks and furnishings from several periods of Colombian history.
