The 2026–27 Premier League season was scheduled to start one week later than usual because of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The campaign began on Friday, 21 August 2026, rather than following the league’s more typical earlier-August opening pattern. The adjustment was linked to the expanded FIFA World Cup, whose final was scheduled for 19 July 2026.
The Premier League said the later start would provide 89 clear days from the end of the 2025–26 season and 33 days from the World Cup final. Those intervals were intended to give players and clubs more recovery time after a major international tournament.
The delay affected the league calendar beyond the first match. The final matchweek was also postponed by one week, while the season was arranged around the expanded international and UEFA competition schedule. The result was a campaign beginning with Arsenal versus Coventry City on 21 August.
