#BlueforSudan used blue because it was whose favorite color?
Answer
Mohamed Mattar
Answer
Mohamed Mattar
#BlueforSudan used blue because blue was Mohamed Mattar’s favorite color.
The campaign began in June 2019 after Mattar was killed during the Khartoum massacre, a government crackdown on peaceful protesters in Sudan. Mattar was a 26-year-old Sudanese activist and engineering student who had returned to Sudan to participate in the protests.
Mattar’s mother said his love of blue was connected to his childhood fondness for looking at the sky. Supporters adopted the color as a personal memorial and as a way to raise international awareness of the violence and Sudan’s wider pro-democracy movement.
The campaign was not named for Mohamed Bouazizi, Khaled Saeed, or Ahmed Merabet. Those are people associated with other political or social events, but they are not the figure whose favorite color inspired #BlueforSudan. The blue profile images therefore carried both remembrance and political solidarity.
