Before Brisbane 2026, Adelaide hosted the UCI BMX Worlds in 2009.
The 2009 UCI BMX World Championships took place from 23 to 26 July at the Adelaide Showground in South Australia. The competition crowned world champions in BMX racing, with eight championship events on the programme. American Donny Robinson won the elite men's title, while New Zealand's Sarah Walker won the elite women's championship.
Adelaide's event was part of the modern UCI BMX championship series that began in 1996. The city is sometimes confused with Perth or Melbourne because both are major Australian cycling locations and both previously hosted UCI BMX Worlds: Perth in 2003 and Melbourne in 1998. Adelaide also hosted the championships before the sport's Olympic profile expanded significantly after BMX racing debuted at the 2008 Beijing Games.
The 2009 edition was followed by Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in 2010. Brisbane's 2026 championships therefore represent a later Australian return, not the country's first time hosting the event.
