At which Summer Olympics were women’s swimming events first included?

The story behind the answer

Women’s swimming events were first included at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics.

Women competed in Olympic swimming for the first time at Stockholm 1912. The program included the 100-metre freestyle and 4×100-metre freestyle relay. Australian swimmer Fanny Durack won the individual freestyle, while Great Britain won the relay.

The introduction was an important expansion of the Olympic program, although women’s participation remained limited compared with modern Games. Women were not immediately allowed to compete in every swimming event, and several distances and disciplines were added only in later editions.

Stockholm 1912 also introduced or popularized several technical and organizational features associated with modern Olympic competition. Swimming races were held in an artificial pool rather than open water, and the Games used electronic timing experiments. A common mix-up is to identify London 1908, which hosted the first Olympic swimming races in a pool, as the first Games with women’s swimming; women’s events began four years later.
