At which Summer Olympics did women’s athletics first become an official Olympic program?

The story behind the answer

Women’s athletics first became an official Olympic program at the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics. Women competed in track and field events there for the first time in Olympic history.

The Amsterdam program included women’s 100 metres, 800 metres, 4 × 100 metres relay, high jump and discus throw. The 800 metres produced controversy after several competitors appeared exhausted, and the event was removed from the Olympic program until 1960.

Women had participated in some Olympic sports before 1928, including tennis, golf, swimming and figure skating. Amsterdam marked a major expansion because athletics was one of the central sports of the Games.

The 1928 Games also introduced several important changes, including the use of a standard two-week schedule and the first Olympic appearance of the flame in the stadium. Women’s athletics later expanded to include a much broader range of running, jumping and throwing events.
