1992 Barcelona Paralympics
Answer
1992 Barcelona Paralympics
Wheelchair tennis became a full medal sport at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics.
Wheelchair tennis had appeared as a demonstration event at the 1988 Seoul Paralympics. Its successful reception helped lead to full inclusion four years later in Barcelona, where athletes competed for official Paralympic medals.
The sport follows the standard rules of tennis with one major adaptation: the ball may bounce twice before it is returned, and the second bounce may be outside the court. This rule allows athletes to compete using wheelchairs while preserving the tactical structure of tennis.
Wheelchair tennis is now played in singles and doubles for men and women, as well as in the quad division for athletes with impairments affecting three or more limbs. The sport is separate from wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby, despite the shared use of sports wheelchairs.
