Metallica performed its famous 1991 free concert at Tushino Airfield in Moscow while touring The Black Album.
The concert took place on September 28, 1991, during the Monsters of Rock festival tour. It became one of the most widely remembered events associated with the album's early touring period because Metallica played to a huge crowd in the final months of the Soviet Union.
The event is often described as the first free outdoor Western rock concert in Soviet history. Attendance estimates vary considerably: contemporary and later accounts commonly cite roughly 150,000 to 500,000 people, while some unofficial claims are much higher. Because the estimates are inconsistent, the safest answer is the venue rather than a single disputed crowd number.
The performance followed the album's release by only a few weeks and demonstrated the scale of Metallica's international reach. It is also distinct from the band's later Wherever We May Roam Tour, which was the first tour directly intended to support the album. Tushino was part of the broader Monsters of Rock itinerary.
