At which Los Angeles studio did Metallica begin recording Metallica in October 1990?

The story behind the answer

Metallica began recording Metallica at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles in October 1990.

The sessions lasted roughly eight months and were central to the album’s distinctive production story. The band also worked at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver for about a week, while final overdubs and mixing took place at A&M Studios in Hollywood during June and July 1991.

One on One was therefore the principal starting point, not the location associated with every stage of production. The long sessions reflected both Metallica’s perfectionism and Bob Rock’s insistence on trying many takes until the performances had the desired feel.

The recording approach also changed. Rock encouraged the musicians to play more collaboratively in the studio, rather than constructing parts in isolation. The resulting record had a stronger sense of a live band while retaining carefully edited and overdubbed performances.
