At which Los Angeles recording facility did Metallica record The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Metallica recorded The Black Album at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles.

The sessions ran from October 1990 through June 1991, covering roughly eight months. One on One, located in the Los Angeles area, provided the large studio environment used for the album’s drums, guitars, vocals, and other recording work. The facility became associated with several major rock productions during that period.

Producer Bob Rock worked with engineer Randy Staub on the project. Rock’s approach emphasized a more direct and spacious presentation than the band’s previous album, ...And Justice for All. The resulting production gave the drums more weight and allowed the guitar riffs to sound especially clear on tracks such as “Enter Sandman” and “Sad but True.”

Listeners sometimes confuse One on One with other famous California studios used by Metallica at different points in its career. The Black Album’s credited recording location, however, is One on One Recording Studios. The album was released by Elektra Records on August 12, 1991, after the lengthy sessions concluded.
