Beyoncé headlined Coachella in 2018 with a historic HBCU-inspired set.
Her performances took place at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, on April 14 and April 21, 2018. She became the first Black woman to headline the festival, making the appearance a major milestone in its history.
The set drew heavily on the traditions of historically Black colleges and universities. It featured marching bands, majorettes, step routines, elaborate formations, and a large ensemble of musicians and dancers. Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams also joined her onstage.
The performance was later documented in the 2019 Netflix film Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé and accompanied by a live album. The project won the 2020 Grammy for Best Music Film, bringing the festival performance to a wider audience.
