Beyoncé’s performance known as “Beychella” took place at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2018.
She headlined the festival on April 14 and April 21, 2018, becoming the first Black woman to headline Coachella. The performance incorporated marching-band traditions, Black Greek-letter organization imagery, African American musical history, and a large cast of dancers and musicians. It was widely praised for its scale, choreography, musical references, and cultural framing.
The nickname “Beychella” was created by fans and media, not used as the festival’s official name. Beyoncé’s set later became the basis for Homecoming, a 2019 Netflix documentary and live album. Former Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams joined her onstage, as did Jay-Z and Solange Knowles in separate performance moments. Because Coachella occurs in California, some accounts incorrectly describe the event as a tour or a separate Beyoncé festival, but it was a headlining set within Coachella’s regular program.
