At the 2018 royal wedding, how long was Meghan Markle’s Givenchy veil?

The story behind the answer

Meghan Markle’s Givenchy veil measured five metres at her 2018 royal wedding.

The veil was designed by Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of Givenchy, who also designed Markle’s ceremony dress. It was made from silk tulle and embroidered with floral motifs representing the Commonwealth’s member countries, along with a distinctive California poppy and wintersweet, flowers connected with Markle’s birthplace and the place where she met Prince Harry.

Five metres made the veil a major visual element as Markle entered St George’s Chapel. Its length echoed the grand scale associated with royal weddings while its personalized embroidery made it more than a purely decorative train-like accessory.

The veil is sometimes confused with the dress train. They are separate components: the veil extended behind Markle’s head, while the gown itself had a comparatively shorter train. Markle also wore a diamond bandeau tiara lent by Queen Elizabeth II.
