At AC/DC's formation in 1973, who was the band's lead vocalist?
Answer
Dave Evans
Answer
Dave Evans
At AC/DC’s formation in 1973, Dave Evans was the band’s lead vocalist. He joined founders Malcolm and Angus Young alongside bassist Larry Van Kriedt and drummer Colin Burgess during the group’s first lineup in Sydney.
Evans had previously been connected with the Australian band Velvet Underground, unrelated to the famous American group of the same name. AC/DC’s first official performance took place at Sydney’s Chequers nightclub on 31 December 1973, with Evans handling the lead vocals. The early band played covers while developing its own songs and stage identity.
Evans’s tenure was brief. After internal tensions and concerns about his suitability as frontman, Bon Scott joined in September 1974 and became the singer most associated with AC/DC’s breakthrough years. Brian Johnson arrived much later, in 1980, following Scott’s death, so neither Johnson nor Scott was the vocalist at the band’s formation. The debut single was initially recorded with Evans before being re-recorded with Scott.
