After the flood, what does Genesis say Noah plants first?

The story behind the answer

After the flood, Genesis says Noah plants a vineyard.

Genesis 9:20 describes Noah as a man of the soil who plants a vineyard after leaving the ark. The following verses say that he drinks wine, becomes drunk, and lies uncovered inside his tent. This episode begins the post-flood narrative about Noah’s family rather than the voyage itself.

The vineyard detail is important because it links Noah’s new life on the restored earth with cultivation and wine production. It also introduces a difficult family incident involving Ham, Shem, and Japheth, which later interpreters have understood in different ways.

Popular summaries sometimes say simply that Noah planted grapes, but the biblical wording is more specific: he planted a vineyard. Genesis does not say that this was the first plant on earth after the flood, only that it was Noah’s first recorded agricultural act after leaving the ark.
