Metallica’s The Black Album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide.
That figure places the album among the best-selling albums of all time and makes it Metallica’s best-selling release. Its sales were driven by the combination of memorable singles, broad radio exposure, extensive touring, and a sound that connected with both established metal fans and new listeners.
The album’s commercial reach extended well beyond the United States. It debuted at number one in ten countries and spent four consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard 200. In the United States, it later became the first album of the SoundScan era to surpass 20 million copies sold there.
The worldwide figure is often confused with U.S.-only certification numbers. Those measures describe different markets and accounting systems. “Over 30 million” refers to worldwide sales, while the album’s U.S. achievement is separately associated with more than 20 million copies and a 2× Diamond certification.
