According to Genesis, who shut Noah inside the Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the LORD shut Noah inside the Ark.

Genesis 7:16 says that Noah and the animals entered the Ark as God had commanded, and then the LORD shut Noah in. The detail places the final closing of the Ark in God’s action rather than describing Noah, his sons, or an angel sealing the door.

This statement comes immediately before the Flood narrative’s description of the rising waters. It also differs from the earlier instruction that Noah build the Ark and bring his family and animals inside. Genesis does not provide a technical description of the door’s construction or a separate human sealing ceremony.

The wording has theological importance within the story: Noah is protected by divine command and enclosure as judgment begins outside. Later retellings sometimes say Noah closed the Ark himself because he supervised its construction, but that is not what Genesis 7:16 says. The verse specifically attributes the closing to the LORD.
