According to Genesis, which two categories of animals entered the Ark in greater numbers than the others?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, clean animals and birds entered the Ark in greater numbers than the other animals.

Genesis 7:2–3 tells Noah to take seven pairs of every clean animal and seven pairs of birds, while taking one pair of animals that were not classified as clean. The Hebrew wording is traditionally understood either as seven pairs or as seven individuals in some translation discussions, but the clear contrast is between the larger number for clean creatures and the single pair for unclean animals.

Genesis 6:19–20 first gives the broader instruction to preserve a male and female of every kind of land animal and bird. The more detailed command in chapter 7 adds the special provision for clean animals and birds.

This is why the common phrase “two of every kind” does not capture every numerical detail in the Genesis account. The text distinguishes general preservation from the larger number assigned to creatures suitable for sacrifice, since Noah later offers clean animals and birds after leaving the Ark.
