According to Genesis, which three sons of Noah left the Ark with him after the flood?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s three sons who left the Ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis names Noah’s sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth before the flood narrative. After the waters recede, Genesis 8:16–18 says Noah, his wife, his sons, and his sons’ wives leave the Ark together.

The text presents these three men as the surviving adult sons of Noah and as ancestors of nations described in the following chapter. Genesis 10, often called the Table of Nations, associates different peoples with the lines of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

They are sometimes confused with other famous biblical families, especially Abraham’s descendants. Abraham lived later in the biblical chronology, and Isaac, Ishmael, Jacob, and Esau belong to later patriarchal stories, not to the Ark narrative.
