According to Genesis, Ham was the son of Noah associated with the ancestry of Canaan. Genesis 10:6 lists Canaan among Ham’s sons, alongside Cush, Egypt, and Put.
Noah’s three sons are named Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Genesis 9 contains the story of Noah’s drunkenness and a dispute involving Ham, followed by Noah’s pronouncement concerning Canaan. Genesis 10 then presents a table of nations that connects the sons and grandsons of Noah with various peoples.
The passage has been interpreted in many ways throughout history, and later readers have sometimes misused it to support racial or political claims. The biblical genealogy itself does not identify Ham with a modern racial category. It names family lines and ancient peoples within the narrative’s account of the world after the Flood.
