According to Genesis, which side had the door of Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark had its door in the side. Genesis 6:16 tells Noah to set the door of the Ark in its side while describing the vessel’s decks and opening.

The verse does not specify whether the door was on the left or right side, nor does it identify a nautical bow or stern. It simply places the entrance in the side of the structure. Many artistic reconstructions add a large ramp or elaborate entrance, but those features are not described in the biblical measurements.

Genesis later says that God shut Noah in after he entered the Ark. That detail follows the earlier construction instructions and emphasizes the transition from preparing the vessel to surviving the Flood. The side-door detail is therefore a structural specification, not a reference to a named location such as the front.
