According to Genesis, which mountain range is associated with Noah’s Ark after the flood?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat after the flood.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” not the exact name “Mount Ararat.” Ararat is generally connected with Urartu, an ancient kingdom in the region around eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus.

Mount Ararat, the famous snow-capped volcano in modern eastern Turkey, became the best-known proposed location through later tradition and popular culture. The biblical wording, however, identifies a broader mountainous region rather than conclusively naming that single peak.

No universally accepted archaeological evidence has established the ark’s location. Claims of discoveries on or near Mount Ararat have repeatedly attracted attention, but they have not produced a scholarly consensus. The distinction between the biblical region and the modern mountain is an important source of common confusion.
