According to Genesis, which bird did Noah release first after the Ark came to rest?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah first released a raven after the Ark came to rest. Genesis 8:7 says that Noah sent out a raven, which went to and fro until the waters had dried from the earth.

The raven is mentioned before the dove in the sequence of birds. Genesis then says Noah sent a dove to see whether the waters had receded. The dove returned because it found no resting place, and later returned with an olive leaf before eventually not returning. That later dove episode is more widely remembered, which can cause the raven to be overlooked.

The passage presents the birds as part of Noah’s observations of changing conditions outside the Ark. It does not say that the raven brought back a specific object. The olive leaf belongs to the later dove account, so the two birds should not be merged when recounting the sequence.
