According to Genesis, clean animals were brought into the Ark in sevens, rather than as only one pair.
Genesis 7:2 instructs Noah to take seven pairs of every clean animal, while the unclean animals are taken as one pair. Genesis 7:3 also speaks of seven pairs of birds. This detail appears alongside the broader command to preserve male and female animals, creating a more complex account than the familiar simplified phrase “two of every kind.”
Translations differ in how they render the Hebrew numbers, with some saying “seven pairs” and others “seven” of each clean animal. The important contrast is between the larger number for clean animals and the single pair for unclean animals. Later retellings often omit this distinction.
