According to Genesis, when did the tops of the mountains become visible after Noah’s Ark flood?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the tops of the mountains became visible on the first day of the tenth month after Noah’s Ark flood.

Genesis 8 presents the event as part of a dated sequence after the Ark came to rest. The Ark rests on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The waters continue to decrease, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains become visible.

This date is not the same as the Ark’s resting date, and it is not the date Noah finally leaves the Ark. Genesis says Noah later waits, sends out birds, removes the Ark’s covering, and receives God’s instruction to go out. These separate stages make the chronology more detailed than many short retellings suggest.

The account uses Noah’s age and the months of the year to organize the flood chronology. The exact ancient calendar system is debated by scholars, but the textual date itself is clear within Genesis.
