According to Genesis, what were the names of Noah’s three sons?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s three sons were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis 5:32 names these three sons, and Genesis 7:13 places them aboard the Ark with Noah and their wives. They are not presented as three generations or as Noah’s brothers; they are his sons and the male members of the family named in the Flood account.

After the Flood, Genesis 9 tells a story involving Noah, Ham, and Ham’s son Canaan. Genesis 10 then presents a genealogy of the nations through Shem, Ham, and Japheth, making the three sons important ancestors within the book’s later family histories.

The names can be confused with other famous biblical family groups. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob belong to a much later patriarchal sequence, while Cain, Abel, and Seth are sons of Adam and Eve. Shem, Ham, and Japheth specifically belong to Noah’s household.
