According to Genesis, Ham was Noah’s son who fathered Canaan.
Genesis 9:18 identifies Ham as the father of Canaan after the Flood narrative. Ham is also named with Shem and Japheth as one of Noah’s three sons. These three sons appear together in the account of the family leaving the Ark and later in the genealogical material.
The story of Noah’s sons in Genesis 9 includes an incident involving Noah’s drunkenness and the actions of Ham, Shem, and Japheth. The passage then records Noah’s words concerning Canaan. That later episode is separate from the question of which son fathered Canaan.
A common mistake is choosing Shem because the Bible gives him a prominent role in later genealogies, or Japheth because the three names are often recited together. Genesis is explicit: Ham is called the father of Canaan. The text does not present all three sons as Canaan’s fathers.
