According to Genesis, what was the first mountain range where Noah’s Ark came to rest?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8 does not name a single peak. It says that the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat after the Flood waters began to decrease. The wording refers to a mountainous region rather than explicitly identifying the modern summit commonly called Mount Ararat.

Mount Ararat is a major volcanic peak in eastern Turkey, near the borders of Armenia and Iran, and later traditions connected the biblical landing place with that mountain. Archaeological and expedition claims about finding the ark there have not produced accepted scientific proof of the biblical vessel.

The distinction between “the mountains of Ararat” and “Mount Ararat” is an important one. The biblical text uses a regional expression, while popular retellings often turn it into a precise mountain name. Ararat was also associated with the ancient kingdom of Urartu, whose name is related to the biblical term.
