According to Genesis, what was the Ark’s only described opening besides its window?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the Ark had a door in its side. Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to place the door in the side of the vessel, while also mentioning a window and three decks. The verse does not describe a front entrance, rear entrance, or roof hatch.

The wording is important because the Ark’s entrance is specified by location rather than by a modern nautical term. Genesis 7:16 later says that Noah and the animals entered, and that the Lord shut the door behind them. Together, these verses make the side door the only explicitly described entrance.

Modern illustrations often show large doors at the bow or stern because artists adapt the story to familiar ship designs. Those placements are not stated in Genesis. The biblical account gives a simple architectural description: a window, multiple decks, and a door located on the side.
