According to Genesis, what was the Ark’s approximate length in cubits?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the Ark was 300 cubits long.

Genesis 6:15 gives the Ark’s dimensions as 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width, and 30 cubits in height. A cubit was an ancient unit based broadly on the length of a forearm, so its exact modern equivalent varied by culture and period.

Using a common estimate of about 45 centimeters per cubit, 300 cubits would be roughly 135 meters, or about 450 feet. Because the biblical cubit is not fixed to one universally accepted metric value, modern conversions are approximate rather than exact.

The dimensions describe a long, boxlike vessel intended to preserve life during the flood narrative. They should not be confused with the Ark’s three levels, which Genesis mentions separately, or with dimensions claimed by later proposed reconstructions.
