According to Genesis, what was placed over the Ark’s opening?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah placed a window over the Ark’s opening.

Genesis 6:16 lists a window, or opening, associated with the ark’s roof. English translations differ in how they render the underlying Hebrew term and the wording of its placement, so the exact architectural form is uncertain.

The narrative later says Noah opened the window after the waters had receded and released the raven and dove. This opening therefore served a practical role in observing conditions outside the vessel, not merely as a decorative feature.

The ark’s other stated features include three decks, rooms, a side door, and a covering or roof. Readers sometimes imagine a modern skylight or a tall tower, but Genesis itself gives only the more general description of a window or opening.
