According to Genesis, what was placed in the Ark's roof to provide light?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, a window was placed in the roof of Noah's Ark to provide light.

Genesis 6:16 mentions a window, or opening, near the top of the ark. English translations differ in how they render the underlying Hebrew term, so some versions describe it as a light, roof opening, or skylight-like feature.

The same verse gives other construction instructions: the ark was to have a door in its side and three levels. The text does not describe glass panes, a lantern, or a modern skylight. Those features belong to later artistic reconstructions.

The roof opening also matters to the narrative’s sequence. After the waters receded, Noah opened the ark’s window before sending out the raven and dove, linking the structure’s design to the story’s observations of the outside world.
