According to Genesis, what was Noah’s occupation after the Flood?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah became a man of the soil after the Flood. Genesis 9:20 describes Noah as a man of the soil and says he planted a vineyard.

This description marks a transition from the Ark narrative to life after the waters receded. Noah’s earlier role is strongly associated with building the Ark, but Genesis does not call his permanent occupation carpentry. The phrase “man of the soil” instead connects him with cultivation and agriculture.

The vineyard leads into the story of Noah drinking wine and becoming drunk, followed by an episode involving his sons. That scene is separate from the Flood itself and is the biblical text’s first post-Flood account of Noah’s ordinary life. Because modern retellings often portray Noah primarily as a boat builder, “carpenter” is a tempting but inaccurate answer to this question. Genesis’s specific wording points to agriculture: Noah is identified as a man of the soil.
