According to Genesis, Noah’s first bird sent out after the Ark rested was a raven. Genesis 8:7 says Noah sent out the raven, which went back and forth until the waters had dried from the earth.
Noah then sent a dove to test whether the waters had receded from the ground. The raven and the dove therefore have different roles in the sequence: the raven is sent first, while the dove is used in repeated tests that provide more specific signs about the condition of the land.
This detail is easy to mix up because the dove became the more famous bird in later retellings, especially through the olive leaf episode. The order in Genesis is raven first, dove afterward.
The passage does not say that the raven returns inside the Ark in the same way the dove later does. It describes the raven going to and fro, followed by Noah’s use of the dove.
