According to Genesis, what type of wood was used to build Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah's Ark was built from gopher wood. Genesis 6:14 gives this unusual material name in its instructions for constructing the vessel.

The identity of gopher wood is uncertain. The Hebrew term appears only in this passage, so scholars cannot securely match it with a known modern tree species. Some translations retain “gopher wood,” while others have proposed cypress or another resinous timber.

Because of that uncertainty, “gopher wood” is the safest canonical answer when a question asks what Genesis calls the Ark's material. “Cypress” is a translation or interpretation, not an equally certain original identification.

The same verse also says the Ark was to be coated inside and outside with pitch, a waterproofing substance.
