According to Genesis, what mountain region did Noah’s Ark come to rest in?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark came to rest in the mountains of Ararat. Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” identifying a region rather than naming one peak.

Ararat was associated with the ancient land of Urartu, a kingdom centered around parts of the Armenian highlands and surrounding areas. The biblical wording does not say that the Ark landed specifically on the summit of Mount Ararat, the famous volcanic peak in modern eastern Turkey. That specific identification became influential in later tradition, exploration, and popular culture.

The distinction matters because the biblical text is geographically broader than many modern illustrations suggest. Genesis says that the Ark rested in the mountains of Ararat, after which the waters continued to recede. It does not provide coordinates or a uniquely identifiable landing site.
