According to Genesis, what material was Noah told to use to make the Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah was told to make the Ark from gopher wood.

Genesis 6:14 uses the Hebrew expression often translated as “gopher wood” or “gopherwood.” The passage does not identify a modern tree species, which means the term remains uncertain. Some translations retain the Hebrew-derived word rather than attempting to identify the timber.

The same instruction tells Noah to make rooms in the ark and coat it inside and outside with pitch. Pitch would have helped waterproof the vessel, although the biblical passage does not describe the exact substance or application method.

Gopher wood is sometimes confused with familiar biblical timbers such as cedar or acacia. Those woods appear in other scriptural construction contexts, but Genesis does not say Noah used either of them. The distinctive term is therefore the most specific answer to the material question.
