According to Genesis, what is the Ark’s width-to-length ratio?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark has a width-to-length ratio of 1:6. Genesis 6:15 gives the measurements as 300 cubits long and 50 cubits wide, which reduces mathematically to one part width for six parts length.

The same verse gives the Ark’s height as 30 cubits. Together, these dimensions describe a long, rectangular vessel with a relatively low height compared with its length and width. Genesis does not provide enough information to calculate every internal detail, such as the exact floor area of each deck.

Modern discussions sometimes describe the Ark as barge-like because the stated proportions prioritize stability and capacity over speed. That is a modern comparison, not a claim made by Genesis itself.

The ratio is also distinct from the question of the cubit’s actual length. Even if scholars disagree about whether the cubit was closer to 45 or 52 centimetres, the numerical ratio remains 1:6 because both dimensions use the same unit.
